Founding Principles
Founding Context
01
CoolRoofsBC has been founded to address a perceived need for a trusted, independent source of information concerning cool roofing, high-performance roofing, climate adaptation and more resilient building practices in British Columbia.
The creation of CoolRoofsBC reflects a commitment to establishing an independent, non-profit, public-interest organization dedicated to advancing knowledge, education, collaboration and evidence-based decision-making concerning better roofing and its contribution to healthier buildings and communities throughout British Columbia.
CoolRoofsBC has been intentionally established as an independent organization whose mission, governance and long-term direction are intended to extend well beyond any individual, management team or particular commercial interest.
02
Why Was CoolRoofsBC Created?
The creation of CoolRoofsBC was driven by the recognition that British Columbia faces a growing need to better understand and respond to the impacts of a changing climate on the built environment.
Buildings represent one of society's largest investments, yet many decisions concerning roofing systems continue to be made primarily on the basis of immediate cost, traditional practices or limited information. As climate conditions change, these decisions increasingly have consequences extending beyond individual buildings — affecting energy demand, community resilience, urban heat, waste generation and long-term infrastructure sustainability.
Cool roofing represents an opportunity to rethink the role of roofs. Rather than being viewed only as protective building assemblies, roofs can become important components of building and climate-adaptation strategies by reducing heat absorption, improving building performance, extending service life and supporting broader community resilience.
CoolRoofsBC was established to address this need by creating an independent knowledge platform dedicated to advancing awareness, education, collaboration and informed decision-making concerning cool roofs and cool roofing throughout British Columbia.

03
Independence and Public Interest

Long-Term Roofing and Climate Resilience
Roofing decisions often influence buildings and communities for decades.
CoolRoofsBC promotes consideration of whole-life value, maintenance requirements, energy impacts, environmental consequences, climate resilience and future adaptability.
Understanding Cool Roofing
Cool roofing uses roofing materials and systems designed to reduce the amount of solar heat absorbed by a roof. By reflecting more incoming solar energy and efficiently releasing absorbed heat, cool roofs can remain significantly cooler than conventional dark roofs exposed to the same conditions.
Reducing roof temperatures can help reduce heat entering buildings, lower cooling requirements, improve indoor conditions during hot weather and contribute to reducing heat accumulation within communities.
